In this study, we assessed the degree of interest in urban reservoirs and their use as common spaces, and evaluated their hydrophilic qualities by investigating the visibility of their water surfaces and the openness of their waterfront areas based on their cross- sectional shapes. The survey was conducted on a total of 17 reservoirs in Osaka Sayama City, Osaka Prefecture, limited to those listed on hazard maps and those attached to parks.
The results are as follows (1) The survey using Instagram showed that many of the use behaviors were related to exercise, and that the waterfront and surrounding plantings accounted for a high percentage of the subjects, confirming that they are spatial features. (2) The visibility of the water surface differed depending on the topographic relief and land use around the levee, and could be classified into five environments. (iii) High openness was confirmed for Sayama Pond and Sub-Pond, where Instagram posts were made, but openness was also observed in other reservoirs used for agriculture in some places.
I think that reservoirs need to be as recognizable and open as possible for future management, and future research on the openness of reservoir space and people’s interest is an important issue to be addressed.
