要旨/Abstract

This research explored how urban green space contributed to people’s life during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly focusing on who used urban green space and how it related to health and well-being of urban residents.

We distributed an online questionnaire survey between June 4 and 8, 2020 and collected a cross-sectional dataset of 4,126 adults living in Tokyo, Japan. We hired WHO-5 for subjective well-being and IPAQ for physical activity as indicators. Then, binomial logistic regression analyses were performed.

The results showed that the different types of users used different types of urban green spaces. Especially, telecommuters, new user of urban green space, used shrine and temple as well as allotment farm more than original urban green space users such as older adults and families with children. In addition, those who used urban green space had better subjective well-being and physical activity than those who did not. Interestingly, allotment farm, had the strongest relationship to subjective well-being among all types of urban green spaces including large park.

Urban green space played an important role in supporting people’s life during the pandemic. However, the magnitude of its contribution differed depending on the type of users and the types of urban green spaces. It is important to create walkable neighborhoods that had a diverse mixture of urban green space to ensures accessibility to urban green space for diverse people.
